Reading

"To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark." Victor Hugo, 1802-1885

At Strandwood, everyone is committed to lighting the fire of reading in each student. To that end we have several supplementary programs to enhance and support the reading instruction that goes on in our classrooms.

  • Instructional Assistants: Our PTA pays the salaries of three Instructional Assistants for classroom support; Kindergarten through 3rd grades. These IAs spend their time working with students in classrooms who need extra support for their academic progress. The direct instruction in reading that these staff members provide supports our goal that all of our students will be proficient readers by the time they leave Strandwood.
  • In addition our PTA pays the salary for a Reading Intervention Support assistant who uses a research based reading phonics program to provide small group instruction for our Kindergarten and 1st grade students who need the additional support to master phonics skills.
  • Our teachers are working closely in grade-level Professional learning communities and staying up-to-date on the science of reading. Strandwood educators understand what comprises effective reading instruction and design lessons to help each student build their skills and confidence with reading.

We feel fortunate at Strandwood to have parent-supported assistant positions, excellent teachers and staff members who recognize reading as the door that opens all other learning. We consider this to be one of the key reasons our school is so successful.
