Attendance and Health

Maintaining Good Attendance

Consistent attendance is vital for learning. Help your student succeed by ensuring they attend school daily and scheduling appointments outside of school hours.

Absences

Report absences by 9:00 a.m. via phone at (925) 685-3212 or email strandattend@mdusd.org. Include the student's name, teacher, dates, and reason. Provide a written note within 72 hours of return.

The office needs to know the reason for student absences in order to identify students and to record whether the absence can be excused. Under state law and board policy, reasons for excusing a student absence include:

  1. Illness or injury of the student, or serious illness which necessitates the absence of the student;
  2. Student attendance at a medical, dental, optometry or chiropractic appointment;
  3. Student attendance at the funeral service of an immediate family member;
  4. Up to five days to obtain required immunizations;
  5. Exclusion from school due to head lice, lack of immunization or physical examination;
  6. Appearance in court; or
  7. Observance of a holiday or ceremony of his/her religion.

More than 10 absences per year is excessive. The SART and SARB teams will be notified for excessive absences or tardies. Students are only released to authorized persons after signing out at the office. Photo ID is required. Students remain in class until you arrive.

Injuries or Illness on Campus

Office staff provides basic first aid (ice, bandages). Families are contacted for head injuries, if the student cannot continue, or if the injury appears serious. Update the Aeries Parent Portal with current emergency numbers. 911 is called for life-threatening emergencies.

A district "Authorization to Administer Medication" form (signed by parent and physician) is required for all medicine, including over-the-counter. Medication must be in the original container and kept in the office. Students may not self-administer.
