All first- through fifth-grade students at Strandwood participate in a weekly vocal music class. They learn fundamental music and rhythm skills using their voices and various instruments. Each third grader receives a song flute and the classes practice throughout the year with an eye toward a performance in June.
Mr. David Wright, the vocal music teacher, leads a voluntary chorus of third through fifth graders which rehearses after school on Thursdays. At the end of the year the chorus performs a musical extravaganza, with sets, costumes and an appreciative audience. Strandwood students in grades 4 and 5 have the option of auditioning for the bell-plate choir, which meets after school on Fridays and performs throughout the year, generally beginning in December.
We feel fortunate that students at Strandwood have access to music instruction and all that does to enrich their lives and enhance their learning. Their opportunities for further involvement in music through after-school programs is thanks to Mr. Wright and his dedication to music education for young people..
