 Strandwood Elementary School

Your child must be 5 years of age on or before December 2, 2017 to be enrolled for the 2017-2018 school year.  Students born between 9/2/2012 and 12/2/2012 will enter TK.  Students born between 9/2/2011 and 9/1/2012 will enter Kindergarten.

Parents can begin the registration process online (https://air.mdusd.org/air/), which is preferred, and then pick up a supplemental packet in the office or parents can pick up a complete paper registration packet in the office for completion.

Included in the supplemental packet are documents that pertain to Strandwood, including a request for early or late friend assignment.  A lottery system will be used to select the student’s assignments.

TK and Kindergarten registration day will be held on Tuesday, February 7th at Strandwood in the B-1 classroom.  This year, we will offer a no-wait appointment through SignUpGenius (email strandattend@mdusd.org with REGISTRATION APPT in the subject line and an email will be sent to you) or you can drop in 9:00am – 2:00pm (wait times will vary).  Your student does not need to be present.

Please bring the online printout and/or the completed paperwork along with the following documents:

  1. Address verification documents – see pink form
  2. Original birth certificate of student
  3. Immunization record
    1. Please note that health/dental forms should not be completed by the medical provider until March or later- they do not need to be turned in at the time of registration.

**A child cannot attend school without complete and up-to-date immunizations**

If you cannot attend registration day, you can email strandattend@mdusd.org with REGISTRATION APPT in the subject line and an email will be sent to make an appointment via SignUpGenius to complete the registration process.

Kindergarten tours of Strandwood will be available on Tuesdays in January and February from 8:30am-9:15am.  Please email strandattend@mdusd.org with KINDER TOUR in the subject line and an email will be sent to you to sign up for a tour.  Spots are limited to 6 families per tour.  (TK Tour information is forthcoming).

Upcoming dates:

In May, we will conduct a Kindergarten assessment for each student (no assessment for TK) at Strandwood.  More details to follow.

In June, you will receive your Early or Late Friend assignment via mail.

In August, you will receive a welcome letter from your student’s teacher and information regarding a visit to the classroom before the first day of school.

We look forward to seeing you Fall 2017!

Dear Strandwood Parents,

As you know, we have 650 children arrive at school each morning. Committed to ensuring that our transitions are safe and organized, we have decided to adjust our morning routines. When students arrive at school, please have them go to the lower and upper grade playgrounds. Teachers will be on yard duty for a modified recess between 7:55 AM-8:05 AM. Students can either carry their backpacks or leave them on their classroom numbers on the blacktop. At 8:05 AM, recess will end and students will line up. Teachers will pick up their classes on the playground and walk them to class. Instruction will start at 8:10 AM. Due to limited supervision, we are closing the field and Blue Heaven before school. With over 300 students on each playground, we are also asking students to not play with balls before school. On rainy days, teachers will open their doors at 7:55 AM and students can report directly to class.

We're hoping that our new procedures will be easy to implement. As the new year starts, we are also reminding students to walk quietly in the hallways and keep hands and feet to themselves. We'll also continue to encourage them to bring out the best in each other and have lots of fun!

Parents, I so appreciate your support. You are the key to our success! Please continue to help us keep our hallways clear during school hours. Additionally, we ask that all visitors sign in and out in the main office.

Wishing you a wonderfully happy 2017!

Cheri Scripter
